Girl Power gets a sneak peek at Perez Art Museum under construction

All of us donned hardhats and followed Education curator Emily Mello as she pointed out the features of Miami's amazing art museum designed by Swiss team Herzog and de Meuron, presently being built brick by brick (or, in this case, poured slab by slab). The views are incredible, the spaces truly monumental. A landmark if there ever was one. We were privileged to get a private tour!

Yarn Bombing the Parking Lot at Mater

We definitely feel that by decorating the parking markers with colored yarn, we have effectively beautified the parking lot at Mater Academy in Little Havana.
In this way, we feel we've made life a little bit more colorful for students and faculty alike.

Tabletop Park Project at Mater Academy

We built a tabletop park using cardboard, spray paint, natural stones, leaves, plants, found objects from the neighborhood, craft sticks & silk flowers. Our idea was to create a park for strolling & enjoyment, providing some shade and a little entertainment in the form of a spinning ride.

Documenting with Photography.

Every Saturday morning our group of young photographers at the LHCC walk around the vicinity  of the center, Lemon City is the name of the area. With their eyes and cameras they re/discover
and make a visual record of  their community.
Here some images from our last class.

Working with Detritus at Girl Power

the concept is recycling detritus that we find in our neighborhood.
our mission is a dialogue with the vernacular, the language of our everyday public street world.
the spirit of art-making is: we make it our own.

Creative Mapping at Mater Academy

A conceptual view of South Florida by students at Mater Academy. Collaging shapes, patterns and textures, we played with the graphics of maps to invent new geographies. We discussed map reading as a kind of literacy that may be rendered obsolete by the use of GPS devices.
