Creative Cartography at Girl Power

GPS devices have replaced basic map skills among young people. Getting involved with mapping and re-designing map graphics has been fun and instructive. This is the Wednesday group at Girl Power.

Productive Graphic Novel Lab today at Girl Power!

Using both hand-drawing and digital media, the group dove right in to composing pages of their graphic novels. Some poets in the group as well......

Working with Detritus at Girl Power

the concept is recycling detritus that we find in our neighborhood.

Field Trip to MAM - New Work 2013 exhibition

Artist Tom Scicluna gave our group a tour of works from the exhibition, which placed art made by Miami artists in the context of Miami architecture, building materials, landscape and artifacts.

Creative Mapping at Mater Academy

A conceptual view of South Florida by students at Mater Academy. Collaging shapes, patterns and textures, we played with the graphics of maps to invent new geographies. We discussed map reading as a kind of literacy that may be rendered obsolete by the use of GPS devices. 

Painting and installation underway at Edison HS

At Edison, we're lucky to have our own outdoor studio, and we have set to work using found wood boards and old tabletops as painting surfaces. We are planning an installation for the final BxB exhibition that links the imagery in five large panels. Street to Universe to Inner Life - it's all underway. Stay tuned.

We met yesterday to review the work of relevant photographers from XIX century to contemporary, and the students were immediately drawn to the work of Lorna Simpson. They reacted to her profound images of self discovery.

This class meets every Thursday at Little Haiti Cultural Center, from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM.
All are welcome.

We will be documenting spaces, light, and much more around the Little Haiti Cultural Center in the following weeks.

Working with the theme of neighborhood landmarks, mapping, the group is composing pages from a collaborative graphic novel using hand-drawn typography, collage from magazines and maps and drawing both abstract and representational.
